PB- and SR-isotopes – indicators for mixing processes in mine waters of the «Himmelfahrt Fundgrube»

Article preview

Lead and Strontium isotope ratios in mine waters were investigated to pinpoint Pb and Sr sources and mixing processes of waters in the abandoned mine «Himmelfahrt Fundgrube» (Freiberg, Germany). Both Pb- and Sr-isotope compositions have shown the important role of gangue carbonates as an element source that could not be revealed by former oxygen and sulphur isotope studies.

Wave principle of substantiation of the boundaries of hydrodynamic influence of geotechnical systems

Article preview

The main goal of the investigation was to numerically determine and apply wave characteristics in a pressure-tight field in justification of the hydrodynamic influence limits in geotechnical systems. However, that research dealt with two problems: studies of wave processes and phenomena in water-pressure systems and justification of new material criteria and assessment techniques to estimate limits of hydrodynamic influence on interiors of a large variety of geotechnical systems (i.e. underground water intake structures, subsurface waste disposals, oil-and-gas fields, etc.). The following two tasks of the investigation were solved: computer simulation of harmonic low-frequency excitation of a pressure-tight hydrodynamic field from a single well (formulation and solution of the problem as experiment planning); modelling of a natural pressure-tight field in real conditions of non-uniform discontinuous industrial mode of pumping liquid wastes from a chemical plant.

Petrological characterization of montsogranites and granosigenites of the Ubukunskoye ore occurrence

Article preview

Granites with monzonitic structure and granosienites represent early and late phases of intrusion development. Crystallization of granites takes place with deanortitization of plagioclase and incongruent formation of К-Na-feldspar. Granosienites are characterized with cotectic crystallization. Changes in granosienites at the acid stage lead to albitization of the K-Na-feldspar, chloritization of biotite and large-scale development of pyrite with Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb impurities. The late alkaline stage is characterized with sedimentation of Ca as calci-spar.

Causes of oil deposits zonality formation in carbonate reservoirs on the example of oil deposits in the south-east of the Republic of Tatarstan

Article preview

Zonal structure of oil deposits in carbonate collectors is caused by the several reasons. The main ones are mineralogical and lithological heterogeneity of sedimentary rocks and physical and chemical evolution of deep streams in time. Good ability of carbonates to be exposed to transformations by secondary processes has allowed establishing general regularities in the sequence of the deposit formation.

Modeling the solution gas drive process in heavy oils

Article preview

Primary heavy oil recovery relies on the Solution Gas Drive mechanism, which has been the object of many recent research efforts. Current models are unreliable, and it is likely that they do not represent important physical effects. Here, we introduce a Darcy scale model in which the relative permeability of the gas phase is replaced by a new expression for the gas phase velocity based on the relative strength of viscous, gravity and capillary effects.

Removing cuttings from deviated and horizontal wells

Article preview

Effective cuttings transport is critical in drilling production horizontal and extended reach wells. In these cases, failure to remove drill cuttings from the hole would lead to deposition and accumulation of cuttings in the annulus, resulting in stuck pipe, eccentric annulus and/or reduced penetration rate.

Development and bench testing of sealing of high speed roller cone bits supports

Article preview

The design has a radial seal with improved spring properties. The seal allows its use in drill bits with two or more bearings without friction. Laboratory tests have shown lower abrasion coefficients of the sealing unit compared to serial ones. The compaction can be used in the system of forced lubrication of the drill bit, which will further reduce the rate of abrasive wear and ensure the bit operation at increased rotational speed.

Prevention of corrosion and salt deposition by inhibiting foam systems in wells of North-West Bashkortostan fields

Article preview

At the late stage of development of oil fields in Bashkortostan, well operation is accompanied by corrosion and salt deposition in underground equipment. The study of elemental composition of accumulations and sediments carried out with the help of energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer "Mini Pal" allowed to determine more precisely the mineral composition of sediments. Traditional methods of corrosion and salt deposition control do not allow to effectively protect the wellbore space. A fundamentally new method of equipment protection was developed and tested, which consists in injection of a composition inhibiting corrosion and salt deposition in a foamy form into the annular space. Tests of the proposed technology conducted at the Arlanskoe field allowed to establish the mechanisms of corrosion rate change after treatment and to work out the treatment technology. The treatments provided 2.3-2.9 times increase of effective protection period. The use of nitrogen as a foaming agent makes the technology commercially safe and environmentally friendly.

Investigation of the possibilities of water-gas influence on the reservoir using pump-ejector units

Article preview

It is known that at present the use of waterflooding is considered as the most common method of reservoir pressure maintenance in Russia and, of course, all over the world. However, there are many physical and chemical barriers to achieving high oil recovery due to the interactivity of the water-rock system. This article presents the results of research of a new technology for realization of water-gas injection using pump-injector equipment.

Fluid flow into the well in the conditions of zonally inhomogeneous formation

Article preview

The effect of changes in the filtration properties of the near-wellbore production zone (NWPZ) on the radius of the outer boundary of the formation (r k ) and well flow rate is considered. On the basis of analytical calculations, it is shown that the size of the drained zone of the reservoir decreases with deteriorating properties of the BHZ. Therefore, taking into account the change in r k , the fluid inflow decreases to a lesser extent than without taking into account the change in r k .

Development of technology for construction of sidetracks with horizontal sections under the condition of preservation of the old wellbore and existing production from it. Justification of economic feasibility of drilling of sidetracks with horizontal sect

Article preview

The practice of new oil and gas fields development often shows that the real oil-drainage boundary is larger than the assumed one. In this connection special zones are fixed on the territory of oil field, which usually are not included into the drainage zone. Such situation is considered on the example of an oil field in Western Siberia. To solve this problem, it was proposed to develop the area of the field not covered by wells by constructing two lateral branches with horizontal sections instead of four inclined wells. The technology of drilling the lateral branches and the technology of tailings cutting are discussed step by step. A review of the equipment used in drilling lateral branches and completing branch wells is given. The economic feasibility of the lateral branch construction project is considered.

Filtering hydrocyclone for drilling mud cleaning with filter sounding by running transverse ultrasonic waves

Article preview

Shakers and hydrocyclones are the most common for sludge cleaning. The disadvantage of the shaker is low cleaning efficiency, i.e. it is impossible to separate small solid particles (sand, mud). The disadvantage of hydrocyclone is high losses of drilling mud - up to 5% per cleaning cycle. To reduce this disadvantage, this paper proposes a combined use of the effect of hydrocycloning and filtration of liquid inside the hydrocyclone with ultrasonic impact on the filtering element.

Slope stabilisation method on S7 «Zakopianka» road case

Article preview

Modernization of the Zakopianka Road is probably the most expected investment in Southern Poland. Some problems occurred during the construction stage connected with protection of slopes from failure at the pre-planned highway location. This problem resulted from a relatively small amount of investment and lack of soil stabilization plans in the original construction design. Various slope reinforcing methods for the Myślenice – Pcim highway section are presented in the paper. The results of calculations with Finite Difference Method (FDM) and Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) are presented as well.

Some topics on using ultrasonic method for concrete casting level measurement in bored pile foundation

Article preview

With the rapid growth of China's economy, bored piles are widely used in infrastructure construction projects. But how to get the exact surface of the poured concrete is a difficult problem in quality control of bored piles. In practice, the only way to avoid quality problems is to pour a larger volume of concrete, which results in more waste and creates more burden on the environment due to the discarded concrete columns. Therefore, the development of an ultrasonic device to measure the concrete pouring level is highly relevant. Based on the analysis of the negative consequences of pouring too much concrete, the paper presents the design scheme of the device, summarizes the main difficulties and summarizes the results of our group.

Investigation of dynamic loads of frame structures of peat machines

Article preview

The movement of peat machines is complicated by the presence of unevenness in the form of bumps and stumps, high moisture content of the deposit in some areas and, finally, deformability of the peat deposit. All this significantly worsens the passability of peat machines in comparison with machines moving on flat hard ground. The purpose of the tests is to select the most rational frame variant in terms of its durability, minimum weight and manufacturability of construction.

Development of device structure for detection of metal objects in ore

Article preview

The purpose of this work is to improve the reliability of devices for the detection of metal impurities in the production line of technological raw materials using eddy current self-sustained sensors. An effective way to increase their reliability is to increase the ratio between useful signal and background noise in the conversion signal channel of the device. This ratio can be increased by developing an optimal device structure. The device structure is designed using the method of optimal matched filtering of signals from background noise.

Application of risk assessment concept in Estonian mining industry

Article preview

The paper deals with the problems of risk assessment in Estonian oil shale mines, where room-and-pillar mining with blasting is applied. This paper examines the risks associated with the application of a new room-and-pillar mining technology using modern machines at the Estonia mine. The new mining technology is based on the transition from packet blasting to emulsion blasting, from 2.0 m boreholes to 4.0 m boreholes (ATLAS Copco machine) and on a new undercutting method (SMAG machine). With this equipment with the new technique, the advancement speed at the entrance reached 4 m. As a result of this increase in advancement speed, situations with unsupported room lengths of up to 5.5 m can be expected with a decrease in the stability of the immediate roof. Various factors relevant for Estonian oil shale mines have been identified. The study showed that the probability and consequences of the risk are acceptable. The used concept of the risk assessment method is applicable to Estonian oil shale mines. It can be used for different purposes and levels. The results of the risk assessment are of particular interest for practical purposes.

Large scale investments in Russia’s infrastructure and natural resources sector

Article preview

Russia has a significant need for large-scale investment in infrastructure and natural resource extraction. It is generally accepted that these needs can only be met through foreign direct investment (FDI). Without an inflow of capital and know-how, Russia will miss chances to grow its entire economy and lose export revenues. This article pays special attention to the conditions for attracting large-scale FDI, which today is increasingly realized through the creation of project finance structures.

Integrated monitoring of the impact of Severonickel Combine on the natural environment

Article preview

The study presented in this article was conducted in the area of Monchegorsk and was aimed at determining the mechanisms and assessing the degree of environmental disturbance and pollution in the process of production activities of the Severonickel Plant. The results of the study of the degree of transformation and the probability of migration of polluting components from waste at the open solid waste storage site due to hypergenic processes are presented. The high acid potential of solid waste is proved, which at relatively small volumes of infiltration water causes significant damage to surface waters due to the global problem. Damaged waters are the only source of drinking water supply in the area of Monchegorsk. The paper also proposes a system of monitoring and assessment of the state of soil and vegetation cover in forest ecosystems impacted by the Severonickel Plant.

Analysis of ecological situation in the zone of influence of the large cement plant and technical solution for its improvement

Article preview

This article analyzes the environmental situation in the zone of influence of the cement plant and proposes a technical solution to improve it. Development of marl deposit by open-cut method has an unfavorable impact on flora and fauna. The forests located at the plant perform special nature protection, sanitary-hygienic, anti-erosion and soil protection functions, but the main function is the ability to clean the atmospheric air from dust, gases and other pollutants The main problem of reclamation of disturbed lands is of special importance. Recultivation of quarry territories is complicated by the presence of complex relief, lack of vegetative soil and fresh water, poor protection and other resources. Restoration of vegetation on steep slopes, high multi-stage quarries is particularly difficult.

Use of long-lived solidifying foams for protection of working spaces from dust and gas explosions

Article preview

Mining is closely connected with human impact on the environment in order to provide it with primary resources. In the SPMI laboratory under the guidance of Prof. Yu.V. Shuvalov, a number of measures have been taken to protect the environment from the harmful effects of technological processes in open pit and underground coal mining, which is currently the most demanded energy resource. In the future, coal will be one of the main resources, as its supply can meet the needs of all industries for a long period of time. The research was supported by the Government of St. Petersburg, CRDF USA, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and REC-015 at SPMI, Russia.

Mechanism of pollution of soil and vegetation cover in the zone of influence of enterprises of aluminum industry

Article preview

The impact of metallurgy enterprises on the soil and vegetation cover increases every year. As a result, soil fertility decreases, heavy metals pollute the soil cover, etc. The main source of heavy metals getting into the soil cover is emissions. Heavy metals get into the soil with atmospheric precipitation and accumulate in it. The purpose of our research is to introduce soil and vegetation monitoring in the zone of influence of the Sevuralboksitruda enterprise, while the environmental department of the enterprise does not carry out real control.

Monitoring and development of methods of oil sludge pits reclamation

Article preview

One of the biggest environmental problems of the Russian oil industry is drilling waste pollution, which has a negative impact on the living conditions of people, animals and plants. Drilling sumps are pits on the territory of drilling sites filled with drilling waste. The problem of drilling pits reclamation can be solved by using local tree crops and skillful application of drilling wastes as a growth-stimulating substance along with reclamation of drilling pits. This makes it possible to develop a fundamentally new scientific and methodological basis for reclamation of forests on disturbed lands.
