The role of calcium oxide in the thermochemical conditioning of bauxite

Article preview

It is well known that lime is an effective additive which allows to increase the depth and speed of the extraction of alumina from bauxite by the Bayer process. The firing is one of the operations in thermochemical conditioning of bauxite, it is rational to enter directly on the lime-stone at firing of bauxite, eliminating the special operation of firing limestone and calcined material damping. In order to test this were carried out research on the firing of bauxite in the presence of calcium oxide, subsequent desiliconization of calcined bauxite and autoclave leaching bauxite concentrate.

Regeneration of reversible alkaline solutions at chemical conditioning of bauxite

Article preview

In Russia and some other countries proposed various ways to the chemical enrichment of bauxite, which usually does not affect the question of regeneration of an alkaline solution of silica, or reduce it to the release of silica in the form of calcium silicate. While the technological circuits of the chemical enrichment of the return should include an alkaline solution, after regeneration, the following parties desiliconization bauxite. It is known that the chemical enrichment is accompanied by a secondary process – the formation of hydroaluminosilicates sodium, the rate of which depends on the concentration in the alkaline solution as aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide. This paper presents data a two-stage osazhdniya silica from an alkaline solution. In the first stage in the form of sodium hydro-aluminosilicates and second in the form of calcium silicate.

Researches on improvement of gold leaching process by means of mass transfer optimization in gas-liquid reactors

Article preview

Modern metallurgy pays more attention to chemical processes safety of staff and nature environment. One of the most hazardous branches in metallurgy is gold ores cyanidation. Researches on possibility to avoid cyanide leaching are carrying out during last thirty years. Cyanide competitors are thiosulphate and thiourea solvers. Within international  cooperation  between National Mineral Resources University and Lappeenranta University of Technology researches are devoted to tiosulphate leaching improvement. Main efforts  are  forwarded  on  process chemistry, however mass transfer processes of heterogenic  systems  are  important  as well. Therefore their optimization is planned to achieve by means of computer modeling based on particle image velocimetry.

Investigation of the effect of concentrate oxidation on thiosulfate gold leaching

Article preview

More and more attention is paying to research of feasible cyanide alternative leaching techniques due to increasingly growing concern to Mother Nature. After some serious cyanide accidents some countries have campaigned to ban cyanide in gold mining industry. Political alignments and concern about environmental have been reasons to find good and less-toxic alternatives to cyanide. One of the most promising leach reagents is stated to be thiosulphate because of its benign properties. Moreover it is suitable for sulphide and carbonaceous ores which present a problem   for cyanidation. In the present paper number of experiments on research of thiosulphate leaching kinetic  study as well as pretreatment of gold concentrate by wet oxidation with following leaching tests is presented.

Selective activity of some sorbents of organic compounds in aluminate liquors

Article preview

Sharp selectivity of hydrocarboaluminates of caustic-earth metals and magnesium oxide in relation to the most dangerous classes of  the organic  substances playing defining role in decrease in extent of decomposition level and deterioration of produced alumina properties– humic, carboxylic acids and high-molecular organic compounds are defined. Soda is good for humic acids sorption (about 40 %) also is inefficient for removal of carboxylic acids and high-molecular compounds. Harmful groups of organic substances generally provide chromaticity of aluminate liquors. The photometric analysis states an objective assessment of the content of the painted organic substances in relation to their initial quantity in aluminates   liquors.

Features of rich iron ores preparation for metallurgical processing

Article preview

Iron ores is one of the main types of minerals used used by mankind. Practically all domestic deposits contain 20-40 % iron ore and so are the deep concentration. Deposits of rich iron ores, containing more than 55-60 % in our country is not enough. One of these fields is Yakovlevskoye iron ore deposit. The use of dry magnetic separation of ore for the preliminary concentration did not give positive results. The study of grain-size composition  of  the  ore  showed a significant disparity in the distribution of iron by classes size that afford it possible to carry out preliminary concentration of ore screening. For ore processing flowsheet is proposed which includes crushing to a particle size of 10 mm, screening fraction of 5 mm. Larger fraction  of 5 mm is used, for example, in the blast-furnace process, and the fraction smaller than 5 mm is direct to the briquetting. As binding substance for briquetting used solution of carboxymethyl cellulose, or a combination of binder based on carboxymethyl cellulose or highly active   clay.

Causes and significance of inflections in hydrocyclone efficiency curves

Article preview

Deviations of the shape of hydrocyclone efficiency curves from the ideal S-shape have long been reported, appearing as changes in slope, or inflections. These inflections can be divided into two categories: coarse inflections, which are caused by differences in density of the minerals being separated, and fine inflections, for which there are a number of competing hypotheses concerning their cause. The existing literature addresses either the fine inflection or the coarse inflection, but no papers have reported both types of inflection occurring at once.  This paper presents hydrocyclone results from both in-plant studies and laboratory experiments that show both coarse and fine inflections and the industrial significance of both types of inflections  are discussed.

Saving energy using various media grinding

Article preview

Grinding of mineral raw materials of different composition in ball mills, rotary and vertical mill is one of the leading process for disclosure of mineral complexes and preparation of raw material for enrichment. Capital and operating  costs for grinding  can  be up  to 70 % of total costs. Reduced total cost of grinding is the most important task in the technology of mineral processing. The main ways of intensifying the grinding process are associated with increased productivity, lower unit costs, improving process flow diagrams and improved process control. At the present time, the reduction of energy consumption in all redistributions concentrator is of paramount importance.

Modelling of thickening process in mineral processing

Article preview

The present paper is devoted to the research of a spatially one-dimensional model of flocculated suspensions in the clarifier–thickener. This model unites a theory of sedimentation– consolidation processes of flocculated suspensions, which leads to a strongly degenerate diffusion equation, with the discontinuous flux. The development of steady-state concentration pro- files in a continuously operated clarifier-thickener is described. Numerical examples for construction of steady-state profiles and their applications for comparisons different modes of operation, to the control of sediment height are presented.

The influence of mineralogical composition features on Severoonezhsk bauxite thermochemical enrichment

Article preview

The analysis shows a sharp aggravation of resource replenishment problem on the mining enterprises of the country. The share explored to date active bauxite stocks is 60-68 %. Provision of proven bauxite reserves has reached a critically low level, and a strategic reserve for existing fields is insufficient. The situation is aggravated by the lack of new mining facilities and the discontinuance of  exploration. While the resource base preparation in the volume, cost-effective for industrial development, requires 10-15 years with a concentration of significant resources. Unfortunately, in Russia there is no high quality bauxite, which is global alumina industry based on. One solution to this problem is to engage in the Bayer process production the low-quality bauxite with thermochemical pre-conditioning. Despite high energy costs, calcinations condition allows bauxite materials for a variety of technologically harmful contaminants such as organics, sulfide sulfur, carbonates, and post-treatment circulating alkaline solutions to improve the silicon module of bauxite concentrate. On the example of high-silicon chromium Severoonezhsk bauxite shows the positive role of calcinations in their processing and increase the possibility of multiple silicon module of bauxite ore, successfully processed by the Bayer method. Laboratory tests confirmed by the experimental-industrial tests.

Analysis of data on crystallochemical nature of the phases of the copper-nickel matte аnd a binary system Со–S

Article preview

The task of the colour metallurgy is the complex utilization of the ore matirial  and  increase in volume of the production with fall of the material expenditures in parallel in unit of the production. During the sulphate ores refining and the nickel and copper ones they extract cobalt, pre- cious and the part of the rare metals, trying realize the very possible cobalts and small part of the ores raws transfer to the nickel product. However nickel can not be separated from copper completely with help of the flotation and that is why they get the sulphate nickel product which has the weight to 4 % of the copper and the copper sulphide concentration with weight 3-6 %. Together with nickel turn the part of the cobalt into the copper  concentration. In the school and reference books there are little scientific well-founded and coordinated facts in phases compound of the stanes and finestanes and besides  about formes of the presence of  the cobalt in the called metallurgy  products.  It is necessary the deep experience in the study of the christall chemical nature of the finestanes phases for the improvement in extract of cobalt to the nickel product during the flotation process.

Basic and strength of iron ore sinter

Article preview

Extreme dependence of the strength of sinter from its basicity is explained by content in the agglomerate iron and calcium silicates, which form a bundle of strength sinter. Minimum strength of sinter corresponds basicity about 1,2-1,4. This proves the attempts to optimize the technology of this agglomerate with  the planning of the experiment. Laboratory experiments have shown that the basicity of sinter with 1,4 at the optimal linear velocity of its sintering about 18,7 mm/min, obtained an acceptable yield ratio not more than 65 %, even at elevated (above 6 %) fuel rate. In order to increase the maximum strength of the agglomerate in this extreme dependence appropriate to increase the content of iron oxide. Found that with the increase in iron content of 1,5 % yield of the agglomerate increases by 1 %. It is noted that the increase in iron content in the agglomerate after the maximum strength can lead to some of its decline, due to increased melting of the charge and decreases the amount of a strength ferritic-calcium binding.
