Landslide hazard assessment in Tinh Tuc town, Cao Bang province, Vietnam using Frequency ratio method and the combined Fractal-frequency ratio method

Article preview

Landslides are one of the most frequent natural disasters that cause significant damage to property in Vietnam, which is characterized by mountainous terrain covering three-quarters of the territory. In 17 northern mountainous provinces of the country, over 500 communes are at a high to very high landslide hazard. The main goal of this study was to establish landslide hazard maps and conduct a comparative evaluation of the efficiency of the methods employed in Tinh Tuc town, Cao Bang province. The landslide hazard assessment was carried out in this study using the combined Fractal-frequency ratio (FFR) and the Frequency ratio (FR) methods. The FR method is based on the actualist principle, which assumes that future landslides may be caused by the same factors that contributed to slope failure in the past and present. The FFR method is based on the determination of the fractal dimension, which serves as a measure of the landslide filling density in the study area. Eight landslide-related factors were considered and presented in cartographic format: elevation, distance to roads, slope, geology, distance to faults, land use, slope aspect, and distance to drainage. Determining the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) and verification index (LRclass) was performed to assess the performance of prediction models and the accuracy of the obtained maps. As a result, five zones were identified for the study area, characterized by very low, low, moderate, high, and very high landslide hazards. The analysis of the reliability of the obtained landslide hazard maps using the AUC and LRclass indices revealed that the FFR model has a higher degree of reliability (AUC = 86 %, LRclass = 86 %) compared to the FR model (AUC = 72 %, LRclass = 73 %); therefore, its use is more effective.

Unique titanium Deposits of Timan: genesis and age issues

Article preview

The article critically analysesthe hypotheses about the formation, age, and sources of material of large Timan titanium deposits, which were previously considered ancient buried placers formed along the weathering crusts of the Riphean shales. We discuss an alternative hydrothermal-metamorphic hypothesis about the formation of these deposits and the source of ore material. It is established that the incoming zircon of different ages (570-3200 Ma), as well as two other geochronometers, rutile and monazite, underwent a thermal effect common for all varieties as a result of a hydrothermal process about 600 Ma ago. According to modern concepts, the closing temperature of the U-Pb system in rutile exceeds 500 °С, which suggests high-temperature conditions for the hydrothermal processing of rutile during the formation of the considered deposits in the Riphean.

Application of the theory of wavelets for compression and filtration of geoinformation

Article preview

The purpose of the article is to develop a detailed and accessible technology for the application of wavelets in the processing of geo-information, the subject of research is wavelet-based filtering and compression of geo-information. The research methodology is based on the modern theory of wavelets in the light of linear algebra. Research methods involve study and generalization, abstraction, formalization, mathematical modeling using computer programs compiled by the authors. After the introduction and formulation of the problem, the basic positions of linear algebra are presented, on which the content of the article is based when constructing orthonormal bases in one- and two-dimensional cases. First, the application of the general theory to the decomposition of the vector of initial data in the Haar and Shannon bases is given. Further, on the basis of the Haar basis, orthonormal bases of wavelet transforms and filtering information are constructed. The procedure for creating wavelet filters by a sequence of convolutions, the use of MSA analysis for constructing an orthonormal basis of the wavelet transform is considered. Implemented the practical possibility of wavelet filtering based on specific programs for modeling geo-information data fields and images, data compression and filtering. The result of the work is the methods of constructing orthonormal bases by various methods of wavelet transform, based on which algorithms and corresponding computer programs for geoinformation compression are compiled using the example of terrain and photographic images. The efficiency of geoinformation compression and noise filtering using wavelets was investigated. A method has been developed for determining the value of a filter depending on the accuracy of the initial geo-information, illustrated by the example of calculating the filter value for compressing information about the heights of the terrain. The same technique is recommended for image filtering.

Peculiarities of kinematics of rock mass shear during development of subseismic-scale faults

Article preview

The article describes the mechanism of formation and development of subseismic-scale faults in sedimentary rock mass based on results of physical and mathematical simulation. Physical modelling of layered rock massif was carried out by using sand-gypsum mixture. The results of physical modeling made it possible to visually evaluate the process of formation and development of subseismic-scale faults, to establish the orientation and amplitude of the modeled faults. It was established that faults with higher amplitude had filler material formed because of friction of fault edges/walls. The volume of modelled formation after formation of faults depending on fault amplitudes changed from 2-3 to 10 %. To gain information on stress deformed condition of rock massif and identification of key peculiarities of fault propagation dynamics we used the mathematical modeling based on particle-flow algorithm. The results of mathematical modeling determined that during formation of low amplitude faults the shear field has several rock clusters. Due to interaction of clusters, which have coordinated movement and promote massif loosening, the rock mass accumulates voids, which are the prerequisite for formation of subseismic-scale faults. The gained results enable to specify the complex mechanism of irreversible shears and deformations of rock mass during formation and development of subseismic-scale faults. It contributes to the improvement of the methodology for predicting the SSF parameters, which is of practical importance in terms of reducing mining risks.

Models for assessment of public-private partnership projects in subsurface management

Article preview

Aims and goals of this paper. The article is devoted to analysis of issues related to development of public-private partnership (PPP) projects in mineral resources sector of Russia. The special emphasis is given to the most common PPP model in the field of industrial infrastructure construction using the Investment Fund of RF. We offer specific tools to be used with Russian models for assessment of PPP projects and forecasting of its efficiency for its participants. This model allows evaluating the results of the whole deposit development process, constructing graphs of all types of expenditures and revenues (by years), and having rent assessment of deposit NPV (net present value) and internal rent rate (IRR). Methods and results. The iteration process at each step enables assessment of budget revenue forecast, living standards indexes, ecological parameters and performance indicators, as well as a certain variant of PPP project implementation for investors (direct government expenses on implementation of infrastructure objects and environmental activities, tax benefits). We have a set of tools for supporting the management decision making process in developing efficient PPP mechanism, balancing long-term government interests, private sector and local people interests arising during socio-economic development of mineral resources area. This method using the suggested tools for analyzing efficiency of a specific partnership mechanism is shown on the examples of projects of developing different deposits in Transbaikal region.

The phenomenon of isothermal transition of metastable aluminate solutions into the labile area and prospects of its industrial use

Article preview

The paper presents theoretically based requirements for the activation of synthetic gibbsite for maximum solubility of the activated product. The article describes the methodological foundations of gibbsite thermal activation and its effectiveness evaluation in terms of aluminate solutions decomposition. It is shown that to obtain high-saturation aluminate solutions, activation should provide generation of the reagent with highly-developed surface area, which is not identical to the structure of the deposited gibbsite. As a result of high-gradient thermal activation of synthetic gibbsite, it has been found that the targeted product develops predominantly an amorphous structure with a specific surface area up to 256 m2/ g, preserving its primary particle size. Activation products were investigated using modern methods of physical and chemical analysis. The experimental results confirmed the possibility of the activated product dissolution in the aluminate solution with a metastable compound and their spontaneous decomposition with aluminum hydroxide formation, characterized by high dispersion ability. It is shown, that a significant difference in kinetics and decomposition rates of solutions is connected with the use of a seed material with different particle size composition, which leads to the development of competing mechanisms, resulting in seed recrystallization, homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation.

Dynamic study of underground loading machine’s working tool crank-rocker mechanism

Article preview

The article is devoted to the dynamic study of the underground shovel’s working tool mech-anism, assembled in accordance with a crank-rocker scheme, containing curved wings, as well as to the study of the effect on uneven movement rate, produced by the working tool mechanism; pa-rameters and structural characteristics of the shovel paw design shape. On the basis of a synthesis of the loading machine’s working tool mechanisms, a kinematic scheme with a shovel paw, con-sisting of a straight operating part and a curved working tail, is offered. A dynamic model of the mechanism based on a variable weight of shovel bulk cargo and drive parameters of the working tool is developed, a motion equation is made up. Comparison between statistical indicators of effec-tive output obtained from the shovel loaders drive mechanism and the results of a separate computer simulation of the mechanisms under analysis attest to the proposed model’s performability.

About the operating mode of bulk handling mechanisms

Article preview

The last two decades have been a period of intense and continuous work for the coal industry of the USSR in the field of solving the problem of complex-mechanized coal mining and, above all, the problem of mechanization of coal loading in working faces. In the development of technical methods and the design of new machines for this extremely important purpose, Soviet mining science and technology have achieved significant success and occupy a leading place. Our designers and inventors have an indisputable priority in the matter of creating loading machines and longwall mining combines, which are the first in world practice to be produced and used in series. Based on the accumulated experience in the design and operation of loading mechanisms in our country, it became possible to formulate and successfully resolve in the fourth five-year plan the most important national economic task: "...to mechanize labor-intensive processes in the coal industry in every possible way, in particular to ensure the widespread implementation of work on the mechanization of coal loading...". Both specialized bulk machines and bulk units of mining combines were designed in the Soviet Union according to a wide variety of schemes. Initially, designers and machine builders sought to create machines with constant mechanical characteristics, designed for use in any mining conditions. In our coal industry, the desire for universality of mining mechanisms determined persistent attempts to build a machine suitable for any conditions of cleaning excavation.
