The article studies further broadening and sophistication of mastered lexico-grammatical material through use of modality and The Sequence of Tenses which helps students to produce more complex syntactic structures and enhance the speech act.

It stresses the key role of the Suez Canal in the foreign policy of the United Kingdom in the first half of the 20 th Century and reviews overall strategies of the conflicting parties paying a special attention to German tactics in desert conditions, which partially explain phenomenal success of the German troops headed by field marshal Rommel in this theater of military operations.
The paper studies challenges of using a foreign (English) language as an instrument of intercultural communication in terms of expressing Russian cultural phenomena by means of this language. An attempt is made to classify difficulties in verbalization of cultural realities according to various linguistic levels. Some practical recommendations are given to overcome these difficulties.

In the 2000-2001 academic year, the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the St. Petersburg State Mining Institute underwent a reorganization aimed at improving the quality of foreign language teaching. The changes affected not only the teaching staff, but also the conditions of teaching foreign languages. As a result of these changes, modern teaching conditions were created at the department, which have no analogues among all Russian universities. With the introduction of the new teaching format, the department faced a number of urgent problems that had to be solved in the course of reorganization.
