Determination of impact hazard potential of rocks in the Norilsk Industrial Region

Article preview

The deeper the mineral deposits developments are, the worse the mining and geological conditions become. Significant growth of stress level in the rock mass contributes to possible manifestation of rock pressure in dynamic form. The resulting task of assessment of rock impact hazard is closely related to the task of obtaining more accurate results of compression tests of samples in rigid or servohydraulic test presses using graphs of their full deformation. This approach requires special expensive equipment, considerable time resources, and sufficient core material. Therefore, it is important to have an approach that allows to assess the propensity of rocks to brittle fracture with research methods simple enough not to result in the loss of quality and reliability of the obtained results. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests of rocks from the Norilsk Industrial Region to determine their tensile and compressive strengths. Test methods involved both domestic and foreign standards for determining the value of the brittleness coefficient. The impact hazard potential of rocks was determined using the Kaiser criterion. It is found that the tested lithological types (rich sulfide ores, hornblende, disseminated ores, and gabbro-dolerite rocks), with the exception of anhydrite, have a low impact hazard potential.

The relationship of fracture toughness coefficients and geophysical characteristics of rocks of hydrocarbon deposits

Article preview

This paper contains the results of laboratory tests to determine the fracture toughness coefficient K IC of rocks for terrigenous and carbonate objects by three methods. The tests were carried out by different methods due to the lack of a standard method for determining the fracture toughness characteristics of rocks in Russia. We used the following methods for determining the K IC coefficient: the extension of core specimens with an annular fracture, the action of a concentrated load on a beam specimen with a fracture and the method of bending semi-circular samples with a fracture according to ISRM recommendations. The paper presents the relationship of the fracture toughness coefficients with the P-wave velocity and porosity. The obtained dependencies characterize the general trend of changing for the studied parameter and can be used in the design of hydraulic fracturing in the fields for which tests were conducted.

Improving transportation efficiency belt conveyor with intermediate drive

Article preview

Modern industry in the XXI century requires high-performance and fully automated technology. The best way to meet these requirements is the introduction of new progressive technologies in the process of transportation. One of the possible ways to increase productivity, as well as automate the process of transportation, is the transition from cyclic machines to continuous transport, namely to belt conveyors. However, with the increase in the length of the conveyor there is a need for stronger belts. This can be avoided by using intermediate drives of various designs. The article describes the principle of operation of the intermediate linear drive with transverse partitions, provides formulas for calculating the values of the tractive effort, gives comparative graphs showing the effectiveness of the use of an intermediate drive in various conditions. The possibilities of increasing the capacity of an intermediate linear drive are described.

Modelling of fiberglass pipe destruction process

Article preview

The article deals with important current issue of oil and gas industry of using tubes made of high-strength composite corrosion resistant materials. In order to improve operational safety of industrial pipes it is feasible to use composite fiberglass tubes. More than half of the accidents at oil and gas sites happen at oil gathering systems due to high corrosiveness of pumped fluid. To reduce number of accidents and improve environmental protection we need to solve the issue of industrial pipes durability. This problem could be solved by using composite materials from fiberglass, which have required physical and mechanical properties for oil pipes. The durability and strength can be monitored by a fiberglass winding method, number of layers in composite material and high corrosion-resistance properties of fiberglass. Usage of high-strength composite materials in oil production is economically feasible; fiberglass pipes production is cheaper than steel pipes. Fiberglass has small volume weight, which simplifies pipe transportation and installation. In order to identify the efficiency of using high-strength composite materials at oil production sites we conducted a research of their physical-mechanical properties and modelled fiber pipe destruction process.

Determination of stresses in a gear disk under transverse bending with an axisymmetric load

Article preview

The need to study stresses in gear disks arises when the wheel is subjected to axial forces during operation. In this case, we are dealing with a plane stress state, characterized by the magnitude of radial and tangential stresses at various points along the radius of the disk. Experimental study of stresses in a disk under static loading of a real sample is possible if the wheel's own weight is used as a load. As a support surface, one can use: 1) the end plane of the rim, loading the disks with the weight of the shaft and partially with the own weight of the disks; 2) the plane of the flange, loading the disks with the weight of the rim and partially with the own weight of the disks. The first position occurs when the wheel is freely supported on the rim, the second - when the wheel is suspended by the shaft.

Determination of tenion in hoisting ropes for low ascent and descent heights

Article preview

The problem of determining stresses in hoisting ropes and the related question of longitudinal vibrations of elastic rods in terms of formulation and solution methods have a long history. The present work aims to continue the analytical development of the problem of determining stresses in hoisting ropes of variable length in order to supplement the theoretical material necessary for rational strength calculations of hoisting ropes. The calculation itself is carried out by combining the most unfavorable circumstances in terms of strength, taking into account both the normal lifting mode and its special cases. The methodology of such calculation requires additional research and is not included in our task.
