Abstract

The close proximity of mining operations to other commercial and residential properties, conservation areas, and public sensitivity to emissions has led to negative attitudes towards mining in the surrounding areas. Above all, the use of drilling and blasting is objected to, with demands for more environmentally friendly mining methods. It is in this context that non-explosive mining methods are being considered as an option. Indeed, for some quarry operators, the use of such methods is the only alternative. The question is what are the real advantages of these methods and what is the balance between the possible improvement of environmental impacts on the one hand and the technological potential as well as the costs on the other. This paper will therefore consider aspects of the assessment of extraction technologies in the context of their environmental impacts and costs. It is intended to assess the mining techniques for solid rock in their entirety. This paper will therefore look at the aspects for assessing mining techniques in the context of their environmental impact and the costs.
