Abstract

The hollow cylinder is flattened under the action of equal and opposite forces directed along the diameter. This deformation is usually accompanied by curvature of the cylinder's generators. The longer the cylinder, the greater the curvature of the generators. For relatively short cylinders, the curvature of the generators is insignificant and can be neglected. This kind of deformation, in which the cylinder's generators retain a rectilinear shape, has been considered using the energy method. In the present work, this problem is considered for relatively long cylinders (tubes, hollow shafts, drums), where the curvature of the generators is significant and neglecting this factor becomes unacceptable.
