Possibilities of seismic exploration for crystalline basement study

Article preview

Possibilities of seismic methods of reflected and refracted waves have been examined for the purposes of detailed study on crystalline basement structure. Investigation of depth and structure of the basement plays an important role in the exploration of various deposits. Sedimentary cover is usually associated with oil and gas reserves. Ore deposits are formed in the basement rocks, basement splits and structure of its surface have a genetic relation not only to ore minerals, but also to oil resources. Reflection seismology is one of the main seismic methods of investigating structural geometry of the sedimentation mass, forecasting its material composition and possible hydrocarbon reserves. However, its possibilities for investigating crystalline basement are limited. Basing on many years’ experience of reflection seismology and physical modeling it has been identified that actual roughness of basement surface limits the obtainable amount of waves reflected from it. Possibilities of reflection seismology for basement structure study are mostly related to investigation of discontinuous faults as diffraction objects using diffracted waves. Method of refracted waves combined with modern procedures and material processing aimed at getting dynamic seismic sections holds much significance for the basement study, especially in the process of surface mapping and, to a lesser extent, in investigating discontinuous faults.

The estimation features of vulnerability and desintegration оf subway construction materials in Saint Petersburg

Article preview

In this paper the features of subway construction materials degradation depending on engineering-geological, hydro-geological and geoecological conditions of Saint Petersburg underground space are considered. The basic types of subway construction placing and their destruction specificity depending on influence of water-bearing horizons hydrodynamic and hydro chemical conditions, natural and natural-technogenic gas bio-production and microbial activity are analyzed. The examples of the disintegrated materials and new growths (salt efflorescence, stalactites and others) chemical compound features depending on the content of ground waters basic components affecting on tunnels lining are resulted.

Asymmetric bending of annular plate by moment

Article preview

Asymmetric bending of the ring plate is encountered when developing designs of couplings, compensators and various corrugated elements included in the overall system to increase its elasticity. The efficiency of such plates is determined not only by their dimensions (internal and external diameters, wall thickness), but also depends to a large extent on the rigidity of the elements to which they are directly adjacent and the design of the transition from the plate to the element conjugated with it. In some cases, the method of fixing the plate along the outer contour comes closest to rigid embedment, in others it can be considered equivalent to hinged support. The main value characterizing the elasticity of the plate is the angle of rotation of the inner contour to which the external bending moment is applied. This value for the scheme with hinged support, all other things being equal, is significantly greater than for the scheme with rigid embedment. However, along with this, there is an unfavorable factor associated with a significant increase in stresses in the scheme with hinged support compared to rigid embedment. The correct solution to the problem comes down to selecting the dimensions of the elastic element in such a way as to obtain the largest angle of rotation of the internal contour at stresses not exceeding the permissible ones. For this purpose, it would be necessary to take into account the degree of rigidity of the fastening and make the calculation as for the scheme with elastic fixing.
