Focus and Scope

The main mission of the journal is: to support the development of innovative, fundamental and applied research in the field of mining geology, engineering and economic sciences and to promote achieved research findings to the national and global scientific, educational and economic environment; to improve quality of training specialists for mining sector and for the development of mineral resources complex in agreement with the Russian state strategy and worldwide science and higher professional education development trends.

Journal objectives:

publication of articles containing results of original open research (theoretical and experimental) works, research-and-practical and innovative activities of faculty members and research scientists of universities and scientific organizations of Russia, near and far-abroad countries of mining-and-geological, technical, economic profiles;
development of open scientific dispute that promotes further improvement of quality and efficiency of scientific research, streamlining of scientific works evaluation;
ensuring publicity of the process and work results of various research groups, schools of sciences and providing Russian and foreign scientists with maximum access to them;
promotion of scientific achievements of mining-and-geological, technical and economic profiles in Russia and abroad;
identification of intellecutual asstes of Russian and foreign universities academia, research centers and top companies of mineral resources sector for implementation of advanced research into educational process;
reproduction and development of scientific traditions, research schools and ensuring their integration into research in mining-and-geological, ecological, economic, engineering fields;
assistance in modernization of specialized education for training specialists for a mineral raw materials sector in line with the main trends and challenges of our times.

Sections journal

Geology
This section is presented by leading scientists and embodies major scientific fields of geologic study such as: petrology; geochemistry and geochemical methods of mineral prospecting; mineralogy and crystallography; general and regional geology; geotectonics and geodynamics; hydrogeology. All of the above explore composition, structure, origin and history of the development of the earth's crust and the Earth on the whole
Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology

This section focuses on the issues of subsoil use; geomechanics and mining; prospecting and extraction of minerals, including oil, gas and coal; geophysics and geodesy; aspects of geological exploration, construction and operation of mining structures, such as wells; mineral processing. Labor protection issues such as the impact of production factors and consequences of survey and exploration works on the human body and geoecology are also taken into consideration
Economic Geology

This section includes articles devoted to solving urgent economic problems of the functioning of the mining and fuel and energy industries. The section is open to a wide range of topics; however, any submission should have aspects of scientific novelty and practical relevance, both of which should contribute to the development of a methodology for managing national raw materials, as well as contribute to sustainable development of different branches of industry
Energy
This section is devoted to fundamental and applied research in the field of energy efficiency and energy saving in the mining sector at the stage of operation of enterprises and devices, and includes newly proposed efficiency criteria. It covers a wide range of research topics in the following areas: assessment of enterprises along with modern ways to increase heat and power efficiency and also energy saving; control automation of energy systems and devices; development of new evaluation criteria and more energy-efficient devices; diagnostics of energy consumers

Peer Review Process

Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two leading experts in the area of research. All reviewers are acknowledged experts in the areas of reviewed materials and have 3 recent publications in the subject area of refereed article.

Expert review:

recommended for publication;
recommended with with due allowance for the correction of shortcomings noted by the reviewer;
not recommended.

A reviewer acts in accordance with ethical standards and does not make use of the scientific data obtained for their own benefit.

The final decision on the possibility of the publication is made on the basis of peer review results at the meeting of the Editorial Board.

The editors observe the ethical standards of confidentiality in regard to scientific information prior to its publication.

Article reviews are reposited in the publishing company and in the editorial department during the period of not less than 5 years.

Order of reviewing

Primary reviewing (not more than 4 weeks). The manuscript is sent to a leading expert in the area of research (anonymous reviewing means that the authors’ surnames are unknown to the reviewers, in its turn authors the reviewers’ surnames are unknown to the authors).
1. On receiving the resolution "the article is recommended with due allowance for the correction of the shortcomings noted by the reviewer" the article and the reviews are forwarded to the responsible author to answer the reviewers’ questions and to make corrections in the manuscript. The opportunity of article correction is on a one-off basis. If the corrected article isn't submitted to the Editorial office within 1 month from the sent date of the review, then the manuscript is withdrawn from publication.
2. In case of positive and negative reviews the article goes to the third expert.
3. In case of two negative reviews («the article is not recommended») the manuscript of article is rejected.
Secondary reviewing (not longer than two weeks). The manuscript processed in compliance with all remarks goes to the reviewers for the approval of the corrected version of the manuscript.
The final decision on a the possibility of publication is made at a meeting of the Editorial Board.

Process of requesting potential reviewers

Potential reviewers are requested at the stages of article acceptance or revision based on formal criteria (formatting, addition of missing data, etc.). Requests are issued by email or in the dialog window of the article page on the Journal website.

Currently we are working on the development of an AUTOMATIC mechanism of requesting reviewers. The request implies mandatory completion of the following fields:

3-5 potential reviewers with an academic degree and publications in international journals, the scope of which is in line with the scope of our Journal (after receiving these suggestions, they are still checked for compliance with the Journal requirements specified below);
3-5 reviewers with whom the authors may have a conflict of interest in their research area (published or worked together in the last 3 years, currently work in the same organization, are in financial or personal relations, scientific rivalry), which can affect impartiality of the review.

Journal requirements towards reviewers

In the Journal of Mining Institute, the requirements imposed on our reviewers are based on the ethical principles of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), which formulate basic principles and standards for reviewers.

Reviewers must:

Have an academic degree (Candidate of Sciences and higher);
Share no common scientific or other interests with the authors of the article (conflict of interest);
Declare any possible conflict of interest and consult the Journal when they are uncertain whether the situation presents a conflict of interest or not;
Have recent (not older than 5 years) publications in the article's research area in the journals indexed in international databases (Q1-Q2 in Scopus, Web of Science);
Have an h-index of 5 or higher;
For articles in English – have an Upper Intermediate level of English or higher;
Be able to prepare a review in accordance with the requirements of journals indexed in international databases;
Be objective and constructive in the review;
Have a good reputation in the scientific community;
Protect confidentiality and refrain from revealing any details of the manuscript or the review to anyone except for people authorized by the Journal (both in the review process and afterwards);
Refrain from using information obtained in the review process for personal benefit or the benefit of other individuals or organizations, to harm or discredit others;
Ensure that the content of the review is not influenced by commercial considerations, origin of the manuscript, nationality, religion, political or any other views of the authors;
Recognize that trying to impersonate another person during the review process is a serious violation of appropriate behavior.

Review Guidelines

In the Journal of Mining Institute, we use double blind peer review ¬process – the authors' identity is unknown to the reviewer and vice versa.

The reviewer receives author's version of the manuscript and examines its scientific component and relevance.

If the quality of the article is insufficient for the Journal of Mining Institute, this should be specified in the review.

In the conclusion of the review, we ask you to provide several strong and weak points of the manuscript, your own opinion about scientific significance of the article and its overall quality.

We will be happy to receive the reviewed text with your commentaries and forward it to the authors.

The duration of the review process is two weeks.

In case there is a need for secondary review, the article is resent to the same reviewer. After the second negative review, the article is withdrawn from publication.

The review must be written in the same language as the reviewed article.

The review is prepared in the template provided by the Journal (Attachment).

Publication Frequency

The periodicity of publishing is 6 volumes per year.

Open Access Policy

The journal «Zapiski Gornogo Instituta / Journal of Mining Institute» provides public access to its content and to full-text articles following the principle:free public access to research findings contributes to the increase of global exchange of knowledge.

The Journal publishes the materials on the basis of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This means that it is possible to read, download, copy, distribute, print the articles and make reference to the full-text articles with attri -bution without any restrictions.

What is permitted:

to share (exchange) - copy and distribute the material in any medium and in any format;
adapt (create derivative works) - remix, modify and create new, basing on this material for any purposes, including commercial ones;
licensor may not revoke these freedoms as long as you perform the license conditions.

Under the following conditions: «Attribution» — You must ensure the appropriate attribution, provide a link to the license and identify changes if any have been made. You can do this in any reasonable manner, but not by the one that would imply that the licensor endorses you or your way of using the piece of work.

Author Profiles and Research Spaces.

Create a profile on scientific social networks such as SciProfiles, ResearchGate, Academia.edu or Google Scholar, and add a brief description of your articleи.

More information about author profiles, as well as instructions on how to create and maintain them, can be found on the website of the journal’s founder, Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University.

Provide your author profile IDs when registering on the journal website and submitting an article for successful attachment to the databases after publication. It is mandatory for each co-author to have an ODCID ID

What we do to promote your article

The editorial board takes a number of steps to distribute (archive) the full texts of publications in various databases. Also, each article is assigned an EDN (e-Library Document Number).

All articles are available as Online First under an open access license to ensure maximum visibility of your article
Each article is available in multiple formats (XML, PDF)
Editors, reviewers, and authors are notified as soon as the article is published
Articles are assigned to the Table of Contents of the journal volume and sent to all regular subscribers

Publication ethics

The Editorial Board of «Zapiski Gornogo Instituta / Journal of Mining Institute» follows the conventional ethical principles for scientific periodicals and guidelines of the Publication Ethics Code developed and approved by the Committee on Publication Ethics (Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE), and demands that all those involved in publishing operation should observe these rules.

General provisions
1. Publication ethics is a set of well-known and generally accepted principles, norms and rules that should be followed by the participants of scientific publication process (the author or authors, reviewers, editors, publishers) and which regulate the relationship between the participants.
2. Publication ethics of the journal «Zapiski Gornogo Instituta / Journal of Mining Institute» (further – publishing ethics) are based on the international standards developed by the Committee on Publication ethics (COPE).
3. Fields of application of publicationethics norms and rules:
  - preparation and submission of scientific articles by the author (authors);
  - cooperation between the author (authors) and reviewers;
  - interaction between the authors;
  - interaction between the author (authors) and the Editorial Board;
  - rights of author (authors);
  - publishers readers relationship;
  - disputed situations between the participants of publishing activities.
4. Publishing ethics compliance is provided by the Editorial Board, the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial and Publishing center.
5. Editorial Board headed by the Editor-in-Cheif is the main regulatory body that exercises control of publishing ethics observance at all stages of preparation and publication of scientific papers.
6. Decisions made by the Editorial Board and the Editor-in-Chief on observance or violation of publishing ethics are final.
Publishing ethics for the author (authors)
1. An article can bedone and provided for publication by one or several authors (coauthors).
2. The author (authors) sends an article done according to the Rules and accompanying documents to Editorial Board be means of website.
3. An article should contain complete author’s (authors’) affiliation o academic degree, academic stasus, position, complete name of the organization, postal address of the organization, city, country, e-mail.
4. An article submitted by the author (authors) for publication should contain:
  - new, original scientific results obtained by the author (authors);
  - true, trustworthy , theoretically and empirically substantiated , logically consistent, accurately represented data;
  - bibliographic references (name-title reference) in case of citation or usage of other researchers' ideas;
  - imprint of author's (authors’) earlier published scientific works in case of their verbatim copying which may be used only as a basis for esearch and new conclusions;
  - sources of any financial support.
5. An article submitted for publication should not contain:
  - false and/or fraudulent information;
  - plagiarism.
6. An article submitted for publication should not be:
  - earlier published in printed and electronic media;
  - sent for publication to other printed and electronic media.
7. Authors guarantee that names of all co-authors and project participants who made significant contribution in research are acknowledged.
8. The author (authors) assumes obligation to participate in the process of revising the article (corrections, amendment) within a timeframe fixed by the Editorial Board when submitting the article to the Editorial Board.
Publishing ethics for the Editorial Board
1. The Editorial Board should in a given time:
  - inform the author (authors) about the receipt of the article and accompanying documents,their registration and acceptance for consideration;
  - direct the article for peer review (if necessary – to additional review) to members of the Editorial Board or leading experts in a the area of research;
  - inform the author (authors) about the results of scientific review;
  - make a decision on acceptance or rejection of the article on thebasis of reviews and examination of the authors’ observance of established rules of submission and representation of the article;
  - report to the author (authors) about the decision of the Editorial Board on acceptance or rejection of the article (with reasons for rejection);
  - to make the author (and co-authors) aware of the received review (reviews) at his/her/their request(-s);
  - send the article to the author (authors) for finalizing in accordance with the reviewer (reviewers) comments.
2. The Editorial Board:
  - reserves the copyright;
  - builds up of the reviewers database – the database of experts in specific research areas presented in the journal;
  - qualified and non-biased reviewing.
3. The Editorial Board bears responsibility for the final decision on acceptance or rejection of the article.
4. Editorial Board:
  - considers each message on the facts of non-compliance with publishing ethics, irrespective of the time of its receipt;
  - in case the facts of non-compliance with publishing ethics are confirmed it without fail publishes either a denial of a statement or apologies, and as well as the information on the carried-out follow-on revision of the article;
  - reports to the Editor-in-Chief on observance and/or on all violations of publishing ethics at all stages of publishing;
5. The Editorial Board takes measures for prevention and/or resolution of the conflicts between the participants of the publishing process at all stages of its implementation.
Publishing ethics for reviewers (experts)

All articles received by the Editorial Board of the journal pass expert review (scientific expertise).
The expert is chosen from the members of the Editorial Board or from the database of reviewers- leading experts in the field of the given research).
The manuscript submitted for expertise is a confidential document, the expertise procedure is carried out in a confidential manner.
The manuscript submitted for expertise can't be copied and made available to other reviews or be discussed with them without coordination with the Editor-in-Chief.
Co-authors or the author of the article can't among the be reviewers of the article.
The reviewer formulatesreasoned critical comments on the relevance of research, its compliance to the profile of the journal, novelty and reliability of results, level and clarity of a material wording and presents the opinion in the form approved by the Editorial Board.
Reviewers' recommendations are the basis for the final decision on the publication of the article made by the Editorial Board.
Reviewing should be objective, independent.
The reviewer should not review articles in which he is interested, and should not use the content of the article for personal benefit.
Reviewers are obliged to report to the Editorial Board about a conflict of interests arising in the course of article reviewing.

Authorship

The Journal of Mining Institute works exclusively with the authors of articles. Articles provided through intermediaries are not accepted. Discussion of the editorial and publishing process with persons who are not part of the authors’ collective is not allowed.

Changes in the composition of authors’ team are possible only at the stages of primary revision and review, when a radical revision of the material is necessary (for example, the inclusion of data provided by other persons; the exclusion of data provided by one of the authors). In such cases, the authors should provide the editors with a written justification, certified by the signatures of all persons involved, including the authors being included or excluded.

In order to qualify for authorship of a manuscript, the following criteria should be observed:

Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work
Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content
Final approval of the version to be published

Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.The right of authorship belongs to the authors of the articles. Non-exclusive rights to use the materials of the Journal of Mining Institute belong to Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University as its founder and publisher (author agreement is provided upon request to the editorial board). Complete or partial borrowing of the materials requires a mandatory reference to the journal's imprint and indication of the copyright holder and the names of article authors. When creating new materials based on the articles published in the journal, citing or translating article fragments for the purpose of citing, it is necessary to refer to the original sources in accordance with the citation rules.

Authors who publish their work in the Journal of Mining Institute agree to the following terms:

Authors reserve the copyright for their articles and transfer the right of the first publication to the journal together with the article, while simultaneously licensing the paper under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) terms and conditions. The license permits to copy and distribute the content in any media and format, adapt it (make remixes, modify and create new materials on its basis) for any purposes, including commercial ones, with a mandatory reference to the original source
Authors can keep and distribute pre-print, post-print and published version of the article
Authors agree to literary editing of the article by the editorial board of the journal and layout according to the current rules and regulations

Ethics of Authors

The editorial board of the Journal of Mining Institute expects authors to comply with the ethical standards, recommended by the Publication Ethics Committee:

Published research must be conducted in accordance with ethical and legal standards
The results of the work must be presented in a clear and honest manner, without falsifications and data manipulation
Authors should carefully check all their calculations, data representations, documentation and evidence they generate
Authors must comply with applicable conventions and laws regarding authors’ rights. Material protected under the authors’ rights (e.g., tables, figures, or large citations) may only be reproduced with the permission of its owner. Direct citations from the work of other researchers should be put in quotation marks and properly referenced
Authorship of a research article must accurately reflect the contributions of individual authors. Researchers must ensure that only those individuals who meet the criteria for authorship (i.e., who have made significant contribution to the work) are considered authors and that researchers who deserve authorship are not excluded from the list of authors
Authors should not copy references from other publications in case they have not acquainted themselves with those sources
New findings should be presented in the context of previous research. The work of other scientists should be properly addressed
Sources of funding and potential conflicts associated with them should be disclosed

Conflict of interests

When evaluating a manuscript, the Editorial Board seeks to prevent conflicts of interest between its members, reviewers, the journal's publishers and authors.

Experts should not be involved in reviewing the works if there is a conflict of interest due to competitive relations, cooperation or other interactions or relations with authors, companies or institutions in any manner connected with the submitted materials. In the event of any conflict of interest that precludes independent assessment of the manuscript, the persons concerned must take their own discretion by transferring their authority to make decisions to another member of the Editorial Board or to a certain reviewer.

The presence of a conflict of interest, declared by one of the participants of the review process, does not in itself lead to a refusal to publish, since the most important criterion for evaluating the manuscript is its scientific quality.

Unpublished materials available in the presented study may not be used by the Editorial Board in their own developments without the written consent of the author. Such information is not disclosed and may not be used by the reviewers, members of the Editorial Board, the editorial staff of the journal for the purpose of obtaining personal benefits.

An article is placed in public domain in case of acceptance for publication. If there is a suspicion of a conflict of interest after publication, the editors of the Zapiski Gornogo Instituta / Journal of Mining Institute act in accordance with the COPE’s recommendations:

Borrowing and Plagiarism

he Editorial Board of the Journal checks the articles for uniqueness using the service "Antiplagiat.VUZ". Before sending it to the Journal, the author must evaluate the uniqueness of the article using the specified or another service and make sure that the data presented in the work are original, all cited materials from other authors are accompanied by links to the original sources and are included in the list of references, there is no illegal borrowing, verbatim and indirect quotations are drawn up correctly, etc. The originality of the manuscript must be at least 85%. Fragments of the borrowed text without specifying the original source are unacceptable.

About the culture of citation and basic requirements for the use of sources, citation and compilation of bibliography you can read in more detail in clause 3.2 "Guidelines for the Preparation and Formatting of Scientific Articles in Journals Indexed in International Scientometric Databases" by Kirillova O.V., Parfenova S.L., Grishakina E.G. et al. M .: Nauka, 2017. 159 p., as well as in "Brief Recommendations for Authors on the Preparation and Formatting of Scientific Articles in Journals Indexed in International Scientometric Databases" (p. 8), prepared with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

The author should understand that his or her research career may suffer if plagiarism is detected and the article is retracted.

With regard to the borrowings, the editors act in accordance with COPE recommendations:

Retraction (recall) of articles

Articles with multiple publications, inaccurate information or infringement of authorship (plagiarism) will be retracted from the journal. If suspicions of incorrect ethical behavior are found, the author is invited to explain the situation that is being considered at the Editorial Board; a decision is made and approved by the minutes of the meeting. Then the information on retracted articles is posted in the Journal's archive, transferred to the Ethics Council (ANRI), posted in the retracted articles Database, in all libraries, databases where the publication of the Journal is located, to make an appropriate note indicating the reason and date of recall.

Penalties for Violation of Publication Ethics

The editorial board of the Journal of Mining Institute recognizes the following types of publication ethics violations and associated penalties:

Incorrect borrowing (plagiarism) - retraction of the article if it was published and a 5-year ban on publication in the Journal of Mining Institute
Duplicate submission, duplication of articles - retraction of the article and a 3-year ban on publication in the Journal of Mining Institute
Authorship manipulation - a 2-year ban on publication in the Journal of Mining Institute
Responsibility for disclosure of financial and personal relationships that affect the results of research/review/publication - a 1-year ban on publication in the Journal of Mining Institute
Data forgery (use of references that are not related to the research topic) - a 1-year ban on publication in the Journal of Mining Institute
