Dynamics of the permafrost process in the European north of the USSR
Abstract
Solving the issue of the dynamics of the permafrost process, i.e., whether permafrost is degrading or developing for a single point, does not provide a solution for the entire region, since elements of hydrogeology, relief, geobotany, etc. have a significant impact on the microdynamics of the permafrost process and can either enhance it , or weaken and even change it to its complete opposite. Thus, as a result of field work, it was established that very often in an area with degrading permafrost there are separate areas with sharply advancing permafrost and vice versa. In this case, it becomes necessary to establish which direction of the dynamics of the permafrost process is the main one for the entire sector of the permafrost distribution area in which the given area is located, and which is secondary, having purely regional significance. Having obtained the purely qualitative side of the dynamics of the permafrost process along a given meridional section, the question of clarifying the quantitative side of this process should be raised. In that part of the meridional section where the degradation of permafrost can be traced, it is necessary to obtain temperature curves in taliks that are in harmony with the modern climate, and thereby establish the magnitude of the deviation of the temperature regime of permafrost at the present time from the one that corresponds to the modern climate.
