Abstract

The crank mechanism in general is unquely determined by three independent parameters, for example, the following: the crank mechanism in general is uniquely determined by three independent parameters, for example: the crank radius r; the relative connecting rod length λ = l/r (where l is the connecting rod length); and the relative offset ε = e/r (where e is the offset). We shall consider these parameters as variables. Then their domains determine the region of variation of crank mechanisms as a whole. The pattern of variations will provide a visual representation of the changes in the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the crank mechanism as its parameters vary, which makes it possible to select the appropriate mechanism according to given specifications.
