D. V. Nalivkin and the geologic map of the USSR

Article preview

D. V. Nalivkin began his scientific activity as a paleontologist. Paleontologist, he remained and all his life. Even in the last years of his life he had to advise on the definition of Devonian brachiopods. However, he was characterized by an unusually broad approach to all the problems he had to study. He considered not only shells, but also the conditions under which the animals lived, the extent to which these conditions endured, the causes of their change, and their succession. All this required tracing individual stacks, layers, and hence mapping.

Actual problems of stratigraphy in connection with the development of the stratigraphic basis for large-scale geologic surveying

Article preview

Stratigraphy is one of the fundamental branches of geological science, creating a geochronological framework, which is used both in various scientific studies, and in geological practice - without it simply can not do any branch of geology.

Geochemical zoning in geological surveying and prognostic-metallogenic studies

Article preview

Geological survey and geological mapping, at the origins of which stood such outstanding geologists as A. P. Karpinsky and D. V. Nalivkin, had a decisive influence on the development of domestic geological science and the solution of applied problems of formation of the mineral resource base of the country. In applied and theoretical geochemistry, in contrast to geology and geophysics, the issues of geochemical survey have received much less attention.

Principles of dissection and methods of geological mapping of intrusive formations

Article preview

Until now, the degree of study of intrusive massifs, with which associated with a variety of endogenous mineralization, remains insufficient to meet many of the demands of science and practice. In this regard, it is necessary to further improve the methods and techniques of study of these formations and, first of all, methods and techniques of field study of intrusions in the process of their geological survey.

Topical problems of scientific and technical progress in geological exploration drilling

Article preview

The fruitful activity of Academician D. V. Nalivkin is inextricably linked with such a milestone event in the history of the Soviet geological service as the creation of the geological map of the USSR. Although this did not exhaust the tasks of geological mapping, still the problem of erasing "blank spots" began to lose its acuteness. In the foreground came the tasks of improving the efficiency of geological exploration, in the solution of which the geological map has acquired the role of a kind of compass, helping to determine the direction of prospecting and exploration work.

Hydrogeology of volcanogenic basins of the Earth

Article preview

Volcanogenic structures occupy a special place in the structure of our planet. During its evolution, the mantle substance was continuously differentiating, melting and rising to the Earth's surface, therefore, volcanogenic rocks of one or another age are widespread in almost every region. However, our attention will be focused on volcanogenic structures of Mesocenozoic age.

Efficiency of high-precision aeromagnetic surveys in geological mapping of the platform cover

Article preview

With the introduction of highly sensitive quantum magnetometers into the practice of aeromagnetic survey, the range of problems solved with the use of this economical and mobile method has sharply expanded. In particular, the first aerial surveys with this equipment, carried out in platform regions, showed that within the sedimentary cover, previously considered practically non-magnetic, lie some horizons of terrigenous rocks, creating magnetic anomalies AT, the amplitude of which is several nanotesla.

Experience in dissection and correlation of the buried Paleozoic sedimentary-volcanogenic strata in the iron-ore regions of the Turgai Trough

Article preview

The areas under consideration are located in the western part of the Turgai trough, within the Valerianov structural-formation zone. Intensive geologic and exploration works on revealing and exploration of skarn-magnetite deposits and other minerals are carried out in the areas. Deposits lie in the folded Paleozoic basement overlain by a cover of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments.

Late Cenozoic terrace levels of the northern USSR and their correlation in geologic surveying

Article preview

The vast majority of works devoted to the description and correlation of the terrace levels of the Baltic, Ladoga, Onega, White, Barents, and Kara Seas and adjacent territories usually consider some local area or a relatively small region.

Improvement of the method of local forecasting of mica-bearing pegmatites of the Mamsko-Chuyskaya muscovite province on the basis of large-scale geological mapping of pegmatite fields

Article preview

At present, the requirements of industry to the quality and size of muscovite crystals extracted from pegmatites have sharply increased. Objects with this type of raw materials from the surface are mostly worked out, and for the development of deep horizons of deposits require new, more effective criteria for local prediction.

Mineral formation processes and mineral facies

Article preview

The history of the formation of the doctrine of facies, in the development of which such a significant role belongs to D. V. Nalivkin, is marked, on the one hand, by the expansion of the range of objects covered by this doctrine, and, on the other hand, by a wider and deeper consideration of their features
