Concept of the Modern Worldview on the Deep-Seated Genesis of Timan-Pechora Hydrocarbons

Abstract

This paper presents a methodology for conducting scientific experiments involving well drilling in the Timan–Pechora petroleum province, confined to the marginal foredeep zone of the northeastern part of the Russian Platform. The research concept is grounded in the metageology of the deep-seated genesis of hydrocarbons in this province and the influence of tectonics on this process - which may not only actively govern the entire cycle, from hydrocarbon generation in source strata to their migration and accumulation in traps, but also effect the reconfiguration of existing accumulations. The planned detailed geochemical and geodynamic analysis of Silurian and Ordovician rock units is aimed at refining the role of high-temperature fluxes in subduction zones, which, owing to the immense endogenic energy of the Earth and vortex structures of energy and mass transfer, may facilitate plume and fluid mobilization, promote hydrocarbon remobilization, and establish a system of replenishment and accumulation. The acquisition of additional and more reliable information on the deep structure of subsilurian (pre-Devonian) strata through drilling, together with the examination of Silurian and Ordovician core material, will provide a rich and essential body of borehole-derived data to inform the assessment of hydrocarbon occurrence in the deep zones of conventional petroleum provinces.
