Scientific and Practical Seminar "ARTefacts of Science" or the "CODE 2026" Competition

Dear students and postgraduates! The editorial board of the journal "Journal of Mining Institute" and the Mining Museum invite you to participate in a new competition, which has become more ambitious and has acquired the status of a scientific and practical seminar!

In addition to commemorative prizes, the "ARTefacts of Science" seminar offers the chance to enter your name in the Mining University's print projects: covers for the "Notes of the Mining Institute" journal, calendars, postcards, screensavers, and other projects.

What needs to be done?

  • Develop a unified concept for the «Journal of Mining Institute» covers for 2026.
  • Select six exhibits to match the chosen concept.
  • This is optional, but try to fit an exhibit item into the thematic volume (cover issue #5, October 2026).

Exhibit selection criteria:

  • Any theme from any museum collection may be chosen;
  • Use your imagination or design approach in proposing ideas and selecting exhibits;
  • – Do not incorporate previously used exhibits (archive);
  • Exhibits on the covers are arranged horizontally. Some exhibits should not be placed on their sides;
  • Each cover may contain either a single exhibit or a collage of several exhibits (but without overlapping, cropping, etc.);
  • The cover layout itself does not change; only the exhibits are (download the cover layout)

Responses will be accepted in the form of:

  • a presentation with photographs of exhibits and a brief description of the concept;
  • an essay explaining the scientific rationale for selecting exhibits and developing the concept.

Competition Dates:

Start: November 24, 2025
Application deadline: January 25, 2026.
Evaluation and awards ceremony: January 26 – February 6, 2026.
