В предисловии изданного на французском языке по постановлению Совета Горного Института Императрицы Екатерины II собрания сочинений И. П. Долбни под заглавием "Oeuvres mathematiques de Jean Dolbnia знаменитый французский математик Gaston Darboux, в частности, написал: ... "Выдающийся геометр, труды которого я имею честь представить Академии, был при жизни профессором анализа в Санкт-Петербургской Горной академии, блестящим учеником которой он являлся; но большая часть его работ была опубликована на французском языке в наших математических сборниках и главным образом в Бюллетене математических наук. Решив собрать их в один том и представить, таким образом, в совокупности, Горная академия оказала реальную услугу математическим исследованиям. Труды Долбни делают честь его стране“ .

In the preface to the collected works of I. P. Dolbnya, published in French by resolution of the Council of the Mining Institute of Empress Catherine II under the title "Oeuvres mathématiques de Jean Dolbnia," the famous French mathematician Gaston Darboux, in particular, wrote: "The distinguished geometer, whose works I have the honor to present to the Academy, was during his lifetime Professor of Analysis at the St. Petersburg Mining Academy, of which he had been a brilliant student; but the majority of his works were published in French in our mathematical collections and principally in the Bulletin of Mathematical Sciences.
