Процесс зачерпывания или захвата с помощью ковша горной массы, находящейся до некоторой степени в нарушенном состоянии сцепления между частицами, является одним из звеньев в цепи процессов по добыче полезных ископаемых. Однако он не получил достаточного освещения в технической литературе. Сравнительно слабо разработаны и смежные области, например теория резания грунтов. Исследовательские работы о погрузочных машинах не углубляются дальше регистрации режима работы машин, не исследуют соответствия машины забою, не анализируют отдельные стадии погрузки и поэтому не могут дать обоснования теоретическому представлению о процессе погрузки, о величинах и характере возможных усилий и методике расчета вновь проектируемых погрузочных машин. Эксперименты с моделями элементов рабочих органов погрузочных машин (опубликованные до настоящего момента) являются только первыми шагами систематического изучения процесса зачерпывания, так как условия экспериментов не могут соответствовать действительной обстановке работы погрузочных машин.

Experiments with models of the elements of the working elements of loading machines (published so far) are only the first steps in the systematic study of the scooping process, since the conditions of the experiments cannot correspond to the actual operating environment of loading machines.
