Вопрос об угленосных провинциях имеет большое практическое зна­чение. Он тесно связан с прогнозами при поисках новых или закрытых месторождений угля и предсказанием возможных качеств углей на не­разведанных площадях. Поэтому в установлении угольных провинций заинтересована не только угольная геология, но и поисково-разведочное дело и угольная промышленность. Этот вопрос может быть правильно разрешен только в результа­те глубокого сравнительного изучения угольных бассейнов и обобщения отдельных углепроявлений в единое целое. Однако его нельзя отрывать от обсуждения объема и более крупных и мелких подразделений, чем провинции. Следующей, более мелкой, единицей подразделения является угольный бассейн. Провинция состоит из нескольких бассейнов и обособ­ленных месторождений. Бассейн сам делится на ряд районов и место­рождений. Границы этих понятий довольно ясны. Гораздо менее разработан вопрос о более крупных единицах уголь­ной иерархии. Акад. П. И. Степанов ввел в науку понятие о поясах угленакопления. Под поясом угленакопления он понимает ту «...площадь наземной поверхности, в пределах которой в определенный геологический период произошло наиболее обильное накопление углистых отложений и угольных масс».

The issue of larger units of the coal hierarchy is much less developed. Academician P. I. Stepanov introduced the concept of coal accumulation belts into science. By coal accumulation belt he means that “...area of ​​the earth’s surface within which, during a certain geological period, the most abundant accumulation of coal deposits and coal masses occurred.
