Расщепление угольных пластов — чрезвычайно характерное явление и отмечается многочисленными исследователями для всех угольных бассейнов и месторождений. Уже около 100 лет назад явление раздвоения пластов угля нашло правильное объяснение в трудах Ч. Ляйеля. За исходное положение при объяснении данного явления им был принят следующий хорошо известный принцип: не уровень моря поднимается, а земля опускается, и, наоборот, не уровень моря опускается, а земля поднимается. Иными словами, Ч. Ляйель связывал расщепление пластов угля с колебательными движениями земной коры дифференцированного вида. Эта точка зрения получила впоследствии всеобщее признание. Расщепление угольных пластов объясняют в настоящее время проявлением дифференцированных движений отдельных участков земной коры, различая при этом пластичные прогибания и прогибания в результате глыбовых опусканий и поднятий.

The splitting of coal seams is currently explained by the manifestation of differentiated movements of separate parts of the Earth's crust, distinguishing between plastic deflections and deflections as a result of clastic sinking and rising.
