Одной из сложных задач в горном деле является разработка место­рождений под водоемами и крупными водоносными горизонтами. Про­изводство горных работ под водоемами изучено недостаточно. Вслед­ствие этого в одних случаях теряется много угля в предохранительных и барьерных целиках, а в других — неправильная разработка приводит к прорывам воды, вызывающим нарушение работ и несчастные случаи с людьми. Так, например, Горное бюро США приводит семь случаев катастрофического затопления шахт в Пенсильвании, главным образом, в результате неправильной отработки барьерных целиков. В то же время, по данным этого бюро, при правильном выборе системы раз­работки, способов отработки целиков и управления кровлей можно было извлечь до 35% запасов, потерянных в барьерных целиках, т. е 250 млн. m антрацита. Это позволило бы продлить работу шахт на 5 лет.
