Идея подземной газификации углей впервые была высказана Д. И. Менделеевым в 1882—1888 гг. В 1913 г. В. И. Ленин в своей статье «Одна из великих побед техники» высоко оценил идею подземной газификации углей, предвидя, что при социализме она может быть поставлена на службу обществу. Владимир Ильич считал, что при подземной газификации можно получать под землей дешевый горючий газ и, сжигая его в топках котлов, иметь на электростанциях дешевую электроэнергию. С помощью подземной газификации углей, по его мнению, можно было бы использовать даже наиболее бедные и неразрабатываемые залежи каменного угля. Он указывал: «Громадная масса человеческого труда, употребляемого на добывание и развозку каменного угля, была бы сбережена».

With the help of underground gasification of coals, in his opinion, it would be possible to use even the poorest and undeveloped deposits of hard coal. He pointed out: “A huge mass of human labor used for mining and transportation of hard coal would be saved”.
