В процессе эксплуатации шахт возникает необходимость депрессионных съемок и обследования состояния проветривания, в результате которых измеряются: общий дебит вентиляторов, количество воздуха, поступающего в шахту, утечки, количество воздуха, доходящего до очистных и подготовительных забоев, депрессии отдельных струй, участков и шахты в целом и другие параметры вентиляции. В результате обследования должны быть намечены мероприятия по улучшению вентиляции шахты, в том числе по уменьшению утечек воздуха.
