The article studies further broadening and sophistication of mastered lexico-grammatical material through use of modality and The Sequence of Tenses which helps students to produce more complex syntactic structures and enhance the speech act.
The paper justifies the necessity to work out a programme of uninterrupted foreign language training for students at higher technical schools; it reviews goals, tasks and a possible structure of the course, principles to select teaching materials as well as ways to assess the efficiency of training.
The paper focuses on the North African Campaign of 1940-1943 and studies its role in the World War II. It stresses the key role of the Suez Canal in the foreign policy of the United Kingdom in the first half of the 20 th Century and reviews overall strategies of the conflicting parties paying a special attention to German tactics in desert conditions, which partially explain phenomenal success of the German troops headed by field marshal Rommel in this theater of military operations.
Рассматривается проблема использования иностранного (английского) языка как средства межкультурной коммуникации с точки зрения передачи элементов русской культуры средствами этого языка. Предпринята попытка классификации сложностей, возникающих при вербализации культурных реалий, в соответствии с их языковым уровнем, а также даются методические рекомендации по преодолению этих сложностей.
В статье обосновывается целесообразность развития экстралингвистических навыков, необходимых для успешного представления научных докладов на иностранном языке, а также представлен краткий обзор учебной литературы по теме.
In the 2000-2001 academic year, the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the St. Petersburg State Mining Institute underwent a reorganization aimed at improving the quality of foreign language teaching. The changes affected not only the teaching staff, but also the conditions of teaching foreign languages. As a result of these changes, modern teaching conditions were created at the department, which have no analogues among all Russian universities. With the introduction of the new teaching format, the department faced a number of urgent problems that had to be solved in the course of reorganization.
